Since 1965, much of Ian Breakwell's work as an artist has been in the form of Diaries, reflecting his preoccupation with the relationship of work and image. The Diaries, a day-by-day record, juxtapose hand-written and typed text with drawing, collage and photography. The film concentrates on one day in the artist's life and shows how the diary stems from his experience of his immediate environment, in this case the Smithfield Market area as seen from his studio window. Breakwell collaborated on the production of the film which uses a collage narrative technique similar to that of the Diary itself.
